How we check facts
This is how pages on MTD Signpost are written, checked and kept up to date.
Where facts come from
- Rules, dates and thresholds come from GOV.UK: HMRC guidance, HMRC press releases and Budget documents. These are the only sources we rely on for what the rules are.
- Every fact links to the GOV.UK page behind it, and each guide ends with a list of its sources.
- Where HMRC hasn't updated its guidance yet (for example after a Budget), we say so on the page.
- If a GOV.UK page and another website disagree, we go with GOV.UK.
How pages are checked
- Every page shows the date it was last checked against GOV.UK.
- We recheck pages when HMRC updates its guidance, after each Budget, and regularly in between.
- We keep a short page history at the end of each guide.
- Drafts are sometimes prepared with help from AI writing tools. Nothing is published until each fact has been checked by a person against the GOV.UK page it links to.
How we cover software
- Prices and plan details come from each supplier's own website, with the date we saw them. They change often, so always check before you sign up.
- We haven't tested every product hands-on, and we say so.
- We only include products that say they work with MTD for Income Tax, and we ask you to confirm in HMRC's software finder.
- Free plans are shown first when you choose "lowest cost", even though we earn nothing from them.
- Money never changes the checker's answer or the chooser's order. How we're paid.
What we won't do
- Publish fake reviews, testimonials or user numbers.
- Use "approved by HMRC" style badges. HMRC doesn't recommend any software product.
- Promise you'll save tax or avoid penalties.
Corrections
If you think something is wrong, email [email protected]. We check it against GOV.UK, fix the page if needed, and update its "last checked" date. Bigger changes are noted in the page history.
